A Famine for the Hearing of the Word

The thought strikes me that the famine is not so much for the lack of speaking as the lack of hearing. I have had the increasing impression that God’s people do not know how to hear the word of God. Or, unlike the Thessalonian converts from paganism, they do not believe that the word they are hearing is indeed God’s word. Therefore, the word is received casually if not indifferently as the word of man, that is to say, without effect.

A Further Guide for the Perplexed

However faint the spiritual condition of Jewish people, the cry of the Shema is familiar to all. How often have we taken refuge in it, and used it as a bulwark of rejection when the uncomfortable question of an alien Jesus is pressed upon our consideration. Persuaded of the un-Jewishness of the matter, and unwilling for a religious polemic that is threatening or disquieting, we return to the fundamental tenet of our monotheistic belief-though if the truth were known we are not that avid for that ‘God’ either-to put an end to the whole unwelcome matter. Then, comfortably assured we have righteously affirmed our Jewishness, we turn again to the more serious issues of life, which in fact constitute our idolatry and chronic rejection of Him who calls.

A Man in Whom the Spirit of God is

You will have to choose either what you presently know, in all of its glory, or you will have to choose apostolic splendor-fresh out of the book of Acts—in all of its magnitude, grisly sweat, suffering, blood, vexation, distress, and calamity.

A Message for the Earnest Seeker

In much the same way as the Shekinah glory lights the holiest place of all, so also are we ‘lighted’ to the degree that first the natural (open daylight at the brazen altar), and later the ‘religious’ (the seven-branched oil-fed priestly serviced Menorah) gives way finally to the unaided Presence of God alone. T. Austin-Sparks […]

A Message for the Nations

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world and all who live in it (Psalms 24:1).  How blessed are the people whose God is the Lord (Psalms 144:15).” It is remarkable, when one reflects upon it, how little deference or consideration is given to God by the nations as nations.  Somehow their […]

A Message on Restoration and Return

(With quotations from Thomas M. Raitt’s A Theology of Exile, Fortress Press, 1977) The prophecies of Zephaniah, as is true with all the prophets of Israel, speak not only to the present condition and immediate future of the nation, but also its eschatological future and end. So one is warned of the Babylonian judgment then […]

A Plea for the Serious Consideration of God

A message, especially but not exclusively, for our Jewish kinsmen as we approach the end of the millennium Be still and know that I am God…(Psalm 46:10) There is a connection between the strange providences of God and what we know of Him, and we have to learn to interpret the mysteries of life in […]

A Priesthood Made Ready for the Future

The Melchizedek Priesthood An edited transcript of message # S04-29. We have previously looked at one or two aspects of the Levitical function of the Aaronic priesthood, but I want to begin to look at the expression of the priesthood in the future. There is clearly an Ezekiel temple. In Ezekiel 40 and from there […]

Abraham’s Ascent – The Necessity of Every Believer

In Oswald Chamber’s devotional My Utmost for His Highest for April 26, entitled “The Supreme Climb,” we read: The great point of Abraham’s faith in God was that he was prepared to do anything for God. He was there to obey God, no matter to what belief he went contrary. Strange that one’s beliefs about […]

An Answer to Ethnic Identity

A word particularly for the black community (adapted from a letter written to a sister) Our identity in God is an enormously significant subject.  I understand (in measure) the terrible depletion of the Black Man in America and the great need for a self-esteem, dignity and identity in the very area in which he has […]

An Apostolic Manifesto

In this late hour, the church needs to consider something that would constitute a plumb line from heaven, something to which we should align ourselves. I believe there is an apostolic distinctive that identifies the true church, and makes of it what has always been its characteristic from the beginning.

An Expression of Loving Concern

A message given by Art Katz to a closely-knit group of community/fellowships known as “The Move” (The Move of the Spirit) in 1988, Lubbock, Texas.  It is a message given in the context of a movement that celebrates the Holy Spirit while, at the same time, essentially ignores some of the classic doctrines of the […]

An Insight into the Mystery of Christ

Paul speaks of a mystery in Ephesians 3:6: [T]o be specific, that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel, of which I was made a minister, according to the gift of God’s grace which was given to me according […]

Anti Semitism: A Little Considered Root

From time to time one reads of how Jewish commentators are chafed by the world’s holding of Israel to a higher standard or account. Their irritation evidently stems from a secular and rational mentality that does not regard Israel as in any way exceptional with regard to other nations, and therefore not deserving of any criterion for judgment than that by which all other nations are held.

Apocalyptic Eschatology

I have an outline of certain last days’ events, but there is no way that I can adhere to a linear statement or discussion.  You will find that I will keep coming back to certain themes in the interweaving of strands that make up the whole.  These are the last days, and I have a […]

Apostolic and Prophetic Foundations

As we enter a decade of enormous challenge, uncertainty and shaking, I am assured that the church stands in great need of prophetic and apostolic foundations with men of that calling giving directive voices. How many of us have recognized that we have come to the end of our charismatic, pentecostal and evangelical tethers? Do we have a sense that there is a further dimension which eclipses all that we have known and had hoped in, but we do not know how to identify, or even find it?

Apostolic Conversion

I believe that the Lord’s heart is on the subject of conversion. I’m very fond of saying, “Many saved, few converted.”

Ask for the Ancient Paths

Anyone whose heart aches for the Jew – and for the nation Israel – recognizes that, indeed, we are at a crossroad.

At the Age of Twelve

At the age of twelve, Jesus is giving us a lesson in the making of a son, and the episode reveals an insight into the definitive principles of sonship that are applicable for sons (and daughters) of God in every generation.

Beyond Categories

The Lord is looking for a virginal first-fruits company that will follow the Lamb withersoever He goes, and in these last days, this ‘withersoever’ is going to bring us to places we never could have imagined and where we ourselves would balk, like Peter when he said, “Let this be far from You, Lord.”
